Prof. Thumbi Ndung’u

Professor Ndung’u is a Professor and Victor Daitz Chair in HIV/TB Research at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal and an Investigator at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI). He also holds the South African Research Chair in Systems Biology of HIV/AIDS. He has expertise in virology, immunology and virus/host interactions. His area of focus has been on key populations and viral strains in locales that are under resourced. In particular he is interested in places where the knowledge of the role of antiviral immune responses are likely to yield the greatest impact in terms of biomedical interventions such as vaccines. Prof Ndung’u has a special interest in capacity building for biomedical research in Africa and has extensive experience in managing complex local programmes and international collaborations.
