DRILL is a five year research training programme designed to produce 20 excellent highly skilled scientists. DRILL stands for Developing Research Innovation, Localisation and Leadership.
Junior health science lecturers and and health professionals interested in research have been appointed as Research Fellows for the programme. Appointed Principal Investigators will mentor the Fellows so they can apply to become National Research Foundation (NRF) rated academics.
There are 5 areas of research which have been isolated for research enquiry and development in the DRILL programme. These are:

- Health Professions Education
- Health Research Ethics
- Health Systems Strengthening
