Prof. Deenan Pillay

Prof Pillay is the Director for the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), a Professor of Virology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and University College London (UCL). He is an academic clinical virologist with research interest in HIV transmission, antiretroviral therapy and drug resistance. He is the former Head of Division of Infection and Immunity at University College London (UCL). Prof Pillay has extensive experience and has sat on a number of research and policy committees, including being former Director of the UCL Biomedical Research Centre.

His recent work has focused on HIV virus evolution (how HIV escapes drug selective pressure). Prof Pillay led the virology work in the MRC-funded DART trial of antiretroviral therapy in Africa; he is the Principal Investigator on the BMGF Pangea HIV consortium and Principal Investigator on the ANRS Treatment as Prevention Trial.
