POLICY BRIEF Physical activity and health in Africa for children and adolescents with disabilities: COVID-19 and beyond

Physical activity in children and adolescents has significant health benefits and is important for their physical, emotional and social development needs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to restrictive measures such as the closure parks, public pools, and gyms; this has led to an increase in sedentary behaviour among the general population, as well as adolescents and children.

With the easing of lockdown restrictions and the opening of schools, there was a need to provide guidance for safe and enjoyable physical activity for children and adolescents that would not increase the risk for COVID-19 community transmission.

The guideline provides information for parents, schools and communities for physical activity recommendations for children and adolescents with disabilities, taking into consideration the COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
