Caring for the Patient Comes First

By: Prof. Petra Brysiewicz

As someone involved in acute/emergency care taking place in hospital, I spend little time interacting with rural health. However, the Rural Health Conference 2019 served as a reminder of the important role that we all play in the healthcare system. The central theme, which started from the very first keynote address, was focused around paying attention to the patients and their families, and this resonated with my oral presentation for the conference, entitled, “Hearing the Voices of Patient/Client Families – Are We Listening?” The presentation highlighted the importance of being aware of the needs of patient families and of actively listening to their needs in order to improve their experience with the healthcare system. One of the best audience comments from the conference was: “Being a great healthcare professional is not about your academic excellence, but about how you treat people!” This indeed summed up the conference for me. Well done to the conference organisers for putting together such a successful conference, where healthcare professionals from many diverse fields and settings had the opportunity to network and learn from each other on the beautiful South Coast.
